The network acknowledged that it sent to its advertisers data including the user name and the last page visited before the person clicked on an ad.
MySpace made the remarks in a statement after the newspaper The Wall Street Journal on Friday released the information. The two companies are owned by News Corporation. The newspaper also reported that some MySpace applications created by third parties had used the user names, in violation of site rules.MySpace tends to allow application developers see the usernames, but not use it for other purposes. The network said it recently discovered that the application "Tagme" had again violated the ban, but its creator, BitRhymes had remedied the situation quickly."Tagme was suspended briefly in a moment by a similar violation of our rules, but turned in a few hours before being re-enabled," said MySpace.BitRhymes said in a statement that the dissemination of information "by an advertising company we work" was not intentional and that its policy is not to give third parties the personal information of users.
